UW-Whitewater Issues Reported “Active Threat to Life and Safety” Alert; University Says No Current Emergency

Students Urged to Follow Official Safety Instructions

WHITEWATER, Wis. — Students and members of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater community were alerted to a reported campus safety concern Wednesday after an emergency notification circulated advising students to take immediate protective action.

The reported message instructed members of the campus community to follow the “Run, Hide, Fight” guidance used during serious life-safety emergencies.

No Active Threat Currently Confirmed

At this time, there is no official confirmation that an active shooter is present on the UW-Whitewater campus.

The university maintains emergency systems capable of issuing shelter-in-place warnings for severe life-safety events. Its published emergency procedures state that such alerts can be distributed through text messages, email, the InformaCast system, the university website and other campus warning systems.

The university also advises that emergencies requiring police, fire or medical assistance should be reported by calling 911.

Students Should Rely on Official Information

Students, faculty and staff should continue monitoring official University of Wisconsin-Whitewater emergency communications for updates and follow instructions issued by campus authorities.

Unverified social-media reports should not be treated as confirmation of an active shooter or other threat.

Campus Safety Remains a Priority

The university maintains a Campus Assessment, Response and Evaluation (CARE) Team that reviews critical campus incidents and works to connect students experiencing difficulties with appropriate support and resources.

As of the latest official update available, however, UW-Whitewater reports normal campus operations and no current emergency.
